Way back in January 2019 (remember 2019?!), English singer-songwriter Sam Smith released "Dancing With a Stranger" alongside Normani. The top ten hit was intended as the lead single from then-titled third album To Die For. Stellar singles such as "How Do You Sleep?", the title track, and "I'm Ready" with Demi Lovato soon followed.
Then, COVID-19 peered its ugly head. Just as the virus forced people into their homes, away from family and friends, the music industry also hit pause on all its major plans and projects. Citing the pandemic delay and insensitivity around the word "die" in the album title, Smith decided to switch gears.
Following the Burna Boy-collaboration "My Oasis", Smith dips their toes in the trendy disco aesthetic for "Diamonds", an energetic anthem where the artist sheds their life of materialistic, shallow love. The effort serves as a second taste of Smith's upcoming Love Goes third album. The artist says the new direction was a promise to themselves to be experimental, to "shoot for the stars and have no limitations". They keep their promise.
"Diamonds", written alongside Oscar Holter (Katy Perry, Troye Sivan) and Shellback (Taylor Swift, Maroon 5), boldly utilizes electro-pop production to signal a cleansing phase for Smith. Following the end of a relationship that only benefited one party, the artist quickly stitches up their broken heart in order to get their life back on the right track.
"You dream of glitter and gold, my heart's already been sold, show you how little I care," Smith belts on the hook, shutting down any indication that the initial hurt will last forever.
In actuality, the artist is turning the tables, happy to learn of their former lover's true intentions sooner rather than later. If they were only with Smith for the expensive gifts and lavish trips, they can keep them. The artist will give their love to some who actually gives it back in return.
Since bursting onto to the music scene with "Stay With Me" back in 2014, Smith has always injected their releases with an autobiographic vibe. While they are now pushing themselves to be more sonically creative, the authentic touch to heavy subject matter thankfully isn't lost. "Diamonds" carries immense emotional weight... it just also happens to be perfect to dance around the living room to.
Love Goes hits shelves on October 30.
