8 Tips For Dealing With Oily Skin

Some people struggle with defining their skin type, but if you have oily skin, chances are that you already know you fall into this category. There is no way you could have missed out on some of the characteristics like frequent acne, visible shine and large conspicuous pores. Oily skin is typical for people in their teens and early 20s. Unfortunately some people battle with oily skin even in their 30s and after. If you do have this skin type, you should not despair. Instead, take proper care of it and you will be able to avoid most problems usually associated with oily skin. Here are some tips that should help you.

 Don’t “Overwash” Your Face

Washing a face that looks oily might seem as the most reasonable thing to do. However, if you wash your face more than twice a day (in the morning and in the evening) you might strip your skin of natural moisturizers and thus increase the production of oil. Of course, you should wash your face more than that if you’ve been perspiring a lot.

Cleanse Your Face (Gently)

Cleansers that are too harsh can, again, strip your skin of moisture. You should opt for gentle foams or gels that would cleanse the sebum and dirt from your pores without leaving you stripped. Always go with sulfate-free products and make sure they are hydrating.

Avoid Face Scrubs

If you have read any of the existing beauty blogs you might have seen that scrubs are considered a regular part of the skincare routine. However, if you already have oily skin, scrubbing it is not a very good idea, since it stimulates oil production. If you are looking for a more clever way to cleanse your pores of dirt and remove dead skin cells, go for salicylic acid as it is oil-soluble.

Be Smart With Toner

Skin toners can be very useful for unclogging pores and addressing oil issues. Still, they can cause dry patches on your skin, so you should use them only on extremely shiny areas, such as your forehead, the area around your nose and chin. Of course, you should always opt for an alcohol-free toner.

Address Your Skin Concerns

In order to take proper care of your skin, you need to address actual issues you are already faced with, like irritants that cause breakouts. For that, you need to look beyond your ordinary skincare products and turn to the ones that consider skincare a health issue, such as Dermalogica line, designed to banish breakouts and control acne.

Choose Your Moisturizer Carefully

Every skin needs to be moisturized properly, but with oily type, you need to be careful when choosing a moisturizer, because if you opt for the wrong one, you can trigger your skin to produce more oil. Always opt for oil-free and water-based moisturizers and stay away from heavy creams.

Reconsider Your Makeup

Makeup is also a part of your beauty routine, and a very important one. When chosen well, it can aid your efforts to control oil production, but chosen poorly, it can do just the opposite. An oil-absorbing primer is a good way to start your makeup because it controls oils and minimizes the shine. As for the foundation opt for water-based products in the form of gel, powder or liquid. Search for the label “noncomedogenic” which suggests that the product doesn’t contain ingredients that will clog your pores.

Consult A Dermatologist

Finally, if everything else fails, stop playing a guessing game and consult your dermatologist. Together, you will come to a solution that’s best for your skin. This is especially important if you are struggling with common characteristics of oily skin such as acne. The sooner you address this problem, the easier it will be to treat it.

Having oily skin is no walk in the park, but if you make all the right moves and take care of your skin properly, you will keep the oil production under control, and your skin will be glowing, in a healthy way.
