Dior Capture Totale Dreamskin Perfect Skin Cushion

Hi everyone,

Did you say cushion? So wait, here I am!
You probably know that I'm a huuuuge fan of cushion foundations. I've been using this type of foundation for about 2 years now and almost haven't used traditional foundations ever since.

So when I heard that Dior was releasing one, I was super excited! I was even more excited when I heard that Dior was cooperating with Amore Pacific to manufacture their foundation. Amore Pacific owns Iope, which is the company that launched the cushion foundation that started all the craze around cushion foundations in Korea back in 2008. So when I heard that Dior was dealing with Amore I was relived that we wouldn't get the weird kitchen-sponge-type of cushion we've seen in other western cushions (phew...) plus we would have rubycell puffs.

On the left is the box of the cushion compact that also contains 1 refill (because Dior sells refills! Yay~!). You can indeed also purchase only refills without the compact case. And on the right is the box of a single refill.

If you're not familiar with cushion foundation, the term ‘Cushion’ refers to a revolutionary make-up compact built with a specially-designed sponge (= the cushion) that safely contains and preserves a liquid formula comprised of foundation, sun protection and various skincare ingredients.

So what I like about cushion foundations:

They are fuss-free products. It's so simple to apply, you don't need to put some foundation on the back of your hand, clean up the excess, you don't need a brush, you can easily carry it in your bag for touch-ups and they're travel-friendly, you don't need your heavy glass bottle of foundation. So yep, I like the easy and quick application you can achieve with cushions.

Secondly, I think they give a more natural finish than traditional foundations. The sponge of the cushion is made of tiny pores that distribute the product evenly on the puff. The finer the pores, the better the product ditribution and the more natural it will look on your face. The puff is also important because it allows for a thin and even application. The puffs of Amore Pacific are made of Rubycell, a material that has antibacterial properties. Therefore applying your foundation with the same puff everyday shouldn't be an issue.

Moreover cushion foundations comes in different formula, from sheer to high coverage and from matte to extra dewy, you have many options.

So what about the Dior Capture Totale Dreamskin Perfect Skin Cushion?

  • The Dior Perfect Skin Cushion is a lightweight tinted moisturizer with a dewy finish and light coverage.
  • Its sponge has very small pores and therefore distribute the product evenly for a natural finish.
  • It comes in 3 shades in Switzerland (4 in the US).
  • Interestingly, when you buy the compact, you get a refill. It's the first western cushion foundation that is sold with a refill, I believe (at least in Switzerland). And you can buy separate refills without having to repurchase the whole compact again. I really appreciate that!

The cushion compact comes with a refill.

To apply, simply press the cushion with the provided puff and dab it onto your skin. You're not supposed to wipe the puff across your face but rather gently dab it all over your face and pat it into your skin. You can wash the puff with soap and it's actually quite easy to wash it (rub a soap on the puff).

I received shade 020 as a PR sample but as it's a bit too dark for me (and especially too yellow, I'm super cool-toned), I bought myself a refill in shade 010. And that's also a good opportunity to show you both colors side by side. The refill comes with a puff.

A refill
When you buy a refill, you get the reservoir that contains the cushion soaked in foundation, a puff, but not the case of course. Then you can clip in the reservoir in your "old" case.

So overall I like that it's a very lightweight tinted moisturizer, you totally forget you have it on. It doesn't look cakey or doesn't emphasize dry patches. What is important to note is that it provides a very low coverage. I personally prefer low coverage foundations but here even for me the coverage is too low, I would appreciate it more if it had a bit more coverage. But still I think it does a nice job at evening out the skin and making it look healthier. I think the healthy look is due to the fact that is has a dewy finish that makes the skin more luminous. I'm all about the dewy look so that's something I really like. So yes honestly, I like the finish but I think it lacks coverage.

That said, Dior says "This ultra fresh, lightly tinted liquid skincare fuses with the skin to create a natural, even, amazingly matte and luminous finish.". The words "lightly tinted skincare" make sense since it is what you should expect: it's not a foundation but rather a tinted moisturizer. By the way, Dior never uses the word foundation. It's actually advertized as a product with skincare benefits. Dior says "the first Dior skincare to instantly enhance the complexion's natural beauty."
That's a bit confusing since I was expecting a cushion foundation. If you take it as a tinted moisturizer , it does the job wonderfully and is a great product. If you take it as a foundation, you might be disappointed.

If you have oily skin or have skin imperfections you want to cover and prefer matte foundations, this cushion is not for you. On the contrary, if you already have a nice skin to start with, have normal to dry skin and want a luminous tinted moisturizer with low coverage, you will love the new Dior cushion.

Best suited for:
  • people with normal to dry skin (it doesn't emphasize dry patches so really interesting for dry skin)
  • people who want a dewy finish
  • people who prefer low coverage foundations because it's sheer to very-sheer. It's actually more a tinted moisturizer than a foundation
  • peolpe who already have nice skin to start with.

Bottom line: it's a tinted moisturizer that gives a nice glowy, healthy, luminous, and beautiful finish and provide low coverage.

Tip: When you've got the impression you've used up all the foundation in the cushion, you can flip the cushion (using a cotton bud) to get more product out from the other side.
